HarmonicDyne x Z Reviews

The Eris was born a collaborative project from HarmonicDyne & long time audio reviewer Zeos from Z Reviews. This Headphones uses a bespoke 50mm dynamic driver developed by HarmonicDyne and physically tuned by Zeos for this project. The aim of the Eris is to be an experience unlike any other currently in the headphone space.

Latest Generation Dynamic Driver

The Eris is designed around HarmonicDyne’s latest generation of Ceramic-Metal High-Flux Magnetic Long-Stroke Dynamic Driver (CMHFMLS-DD). Featuring a 50mm ceramic-metal fusion diaphragm. This new dynamic driver is extremely responsive and delivers some of the best sound HarmonicDyne has to offer. Combining the tensile strength of micron-thin metal sheets, with the rigidity of ceramic layering, the CMHFMLS diaphragm achieves greater rigidity than typical membrane-based diaphragms while offering more resolution, extremely wide staging, and deep powerful low end reproduction without noticeable distortion. Creating a unique timbre even discerning audiophiles will want in their collection.

Semi-Closed Back Design

The Eris features HarmonicDyne’s M-type pressure relief system that passively ventilates the acoustic cavity. This system combines some of the benefits of closed back headphones, such as better sound isolation (roughly -5db) with passive airflow to achieve an open-sounding or “big stage” experience. Balancing/tuning the internal pressure within the acoustic cavity allows for a life-like sound staging experience and substantial bass control, down to sub-bass frequencies. All being accomplished without the sound leakage usually associated with fully-open headphones and greatly reducing interruptions to your music, gaming, movie watching experience from ambient noise.

Comfort, Build, Looks

Zeos put extra care into making sure the Eris was as comfortable as possible for long listening sessions. The pads being crafted out of softer materials and featuring a unique Light Blue micro-suede fabric and vegan-leather design in order to achieve the ideal level of airflow, isolation, and comfort in both warm and cool environments. The headband and frame are constructed with resilient materials including injection molded plastic, glass, aluminum, and were put through rigorous physical testing. Eris weighs 320g (without cable) to be lightweight enough to use for hours while walking, gaming, yoga and other physical activities. The matte black color scheme and aesthetic deep purple Glass-Back design of the Eris was used to portray a modern, clean, understated & timeless look.

The Balanced Cable

Eris comes STANDARD with a 4.4mm custom balanced cable (3.5mm Dual Entry) made from customized solder-tuned single crystal copper wires. More costly to manufacture then traditional stock cables, this upgraded cable allows for worry free connection from any source gear to Eris for the best listening experience right out of the box, and can be swapped out for other custom 3.5mm dual termination cables in the future, ensuring customizability and preference are in your hands.

Two Listening Experiences

Due to the fully symmetrical design of the Eris, it is actually possible to reverse the cable left and right and use the headphone backwards to achieve a separate and unique listening experience. Moving the off center / angled driver to the rear of the cup, this takes the focus off of detail retrieval and applies an even greater sound stage presentation, while keeping imaging and overall tonality very similar. Perhaps the most unique feature this headphone.

Mythology of the Goddess Eris

In the tradition of HarmonicDyne headphones being named after ancient deities, the name Eris was carefully chosen by Zeos due to her disruptive behavior in the world of Greek mythology. Sister to Ares, the God of War, and known for being a troublemaker, she is usually found sowing discord among the other Gods and was a force to be feared. Often joining Ares, completely in her element on the battlefield, this headphone seeks to be a similarly disruptive element of the audio world, cemented by the quote placed on the box “The Bass Violence Necessary for Change”.

NOTICE: Eris can take up to 50 hours of Burn-in for the driver and ~10 Hours of Break-in for the Pads to achieve its final sound. When brand new, if the pads have any noise/squeak this is caused by a residue on the plastic below the pads from manufacturing. Remove the pads and wipe the plastic facia with fingers or a clean rag to remove film and then restore the pads.

Some times violence is needed

Man I’ll tell you if you listen to most reviewers you would only listen to things like the HD600 and the Sundara. Neutral, natural, balanced, even, lifelike, adjectives…. All pretty ways to say boring. Boring is good! Like I’m an HD600 enjoyer, I love my Arya stealth. Though those cans are boring they are detailed and resolving. But sometimes you just want to sit in your recliner and have fun while you relax! The Eris is that. Fun, the bass is violently good. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tool, Sleep token all sound amazing because I can actually follow and hear the bassist separated. The bass drops can be felt in these cans. Though neither are the star of the show both the mids and treble are good and plentiful. Highly recommend to anyone who wants some flavor and fun in their life.

All of the bass

If you like Bass buy this headphone, all of the bass missing from other headphones found its way to the Eris.

Also if you want the most comfortable headphone you need to buy this, it’s like a pillow gently pressing against you.

If you like detail buy something else, if you like things bright and sparkling, buy something else.

Subject to change?

As Zeos stated, they have deeeeeeep bass but at this time, there's way too much mid bass and I can't properly evaluate the overall sound. Z said they require a lot of break in so I've utilized YT break in files for at least 72 hrs without significant improvement. I do so love the cable and my xDuuo T22 accepts the Penticon balanced jack. I will see Zeos at CanJam SoCal where things may get straightened out. They're SO comfortable so I want them to sound as good as they feel.

Bass violence indeed!

These are really fun to listen to. Exaggerated yet tight bass, soundstage and a good amount of detail. Handles any kind of music and great for watching movies.

Compelling, incredibly comfortable, ok sound...

Pros:
- This headphone represents the compelling story of Z Reviews trying to "shake up" the audio market by tuning a headphone to bonkers measurements and telling people to just shut up and enjoy it. If you like Z, these are inherently interesting. If you don't this is a con, not a pro. I admire his craziness and attempts at forwardness and honesty. If I listened to headphones for a living, I'd be convinced this is a compelling headphone. It's FUN, just have FUN is the real message behind it all.
- This is a comfortable headphone for someone with large ears! It's like pillows softly cradling my head. All the touch points are soft and purple coziness. I could sleep (on my back) while wearing these. It's stupid comfortable and fits great 96% of the time. It needs adjusting every once in a while, but never is uncomfortable, rather it can just fit strangely that 4% of the time.
- Its semi-closed back design is new in my headphone collection, and likely to yours too! Sound profile aside, it's fun to try something different and new.
- In the wake of DMS's $1,000 headphone, Z's $250 seems reasonable for a headphone from an influencer. Decent Midrange Hifi seems to live around the $300 arena, so this price seems acceptable.
- The included cable and box are nice for the price of these. I'm happy it comes with 4.4 balanced! The cable doesn't seem to get tangled easily and works as intended.

Cons:
- If you don't like Z's personality or hot takes, you have almost no reason to buy this headphone. His eccentricities may ruin the intrigue of these headphones for many people. I disagree with many of Z's takes but I still found myself interested enough to buy these.
- It's a bit of an ugly headphone. I think it's size and shape lends it to being so comfortable, but it sure looks big and gaudy in its presentation. The purple is fun, but silly in public, as is the size and semi open back sound leakage. I would consider these a home headphone only. Most of all, I wish the glass was removed. It's intended to make the headphone look and feel higher quality but instead it cheapens the entire feel because the plastics adjacent to the glass are fairly cheap. The molding and type of plastic they use do not feel close to top notch. The glass feels like it's just dead weight on the headphone, I wish it wasn't there.
- Wearing the headphones "backwards" didn't provide notable sound differences to my untrained ears.

SOUND:
This is an incredibly V shaped sound signature with slumped vocals being crowded out by loud sometimes muddy upper bass and a serious lack of slam in the sub bass. On top of that there is some shrill levels in the upper treble. Some songs were hard to listen to because of the treble. I used my DAP's EQ settings to taper some of it off (Hiby has great sound tuning options in their DAPs). Its detail retrieval is nice but like I said so many of the mids are suppressed so vocal heavy songs sound other worldly... in a bad way. EDM is at home on these headphones I guess, but it's hard to predict its performance otherwise. The most compelling thing about this headphone is my curiosity for how the music WILL sound on them. This sound invites genuine curiosity and the listening process of music. I'm compelled to listen to their weirdness. I have many headphones similar to each other, but this pair is certainly different! The sound stage isn't as wide as I expected from Z's pitch. The lacking mids really make everything feel suppressed, not wide.

Overall, maybe wait for a sale, 200 or less and these are a fun quirky pair in your collection. Otherwise, it sounds extremely V shaped without ideal bass and treble responses. It's simply compelling, different, and comfortable. I give it a 3/5 sound, 2/5 build, 5/5 intrigue.
